Breeding program to help in the heat

Topic: Heat Tolerance ABV

A new Heat Tolerance ABV will be one consideration when choosing bulls to use over the 640 cows in the Gorbro Holstein herd run by the Gordon family at Cohuna in Northern Victoria.

“Climate change is going to result in more variable and extreme weather patterns so making sure we use bulls with improved Heat Tolerance is part of a long-term strategy for the herd,” Ross Gordon said.

“We’ve been part of the Ginfo project so have genotypes for the herd which show a spread in the Heat Tolerance ABVs of our cows. We will be looking for bulls which combine production and heat tolerance in the future. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE
